Yevlakh, Azerbaijan. A young boy looks at a badly burned corpse before it is cleaned prior to burial. Corpses are cleaned and swathed in white cloth in accordance to Muslim tradition. Yevlakh is a small town which at the time was on the front of the war and was taken by Armenia shortly after this photo was taken. Armenia and Azerbaijan have been fighting a long war over Nagorno-Karabakh, an ethnically Armenian enclave within the borders of Azerbaijan. The stage was set for this conflict when Stalin, who on a whim "gifted" the region to Azerbaijan on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Soviet Union.
