On January 18, 2002, the Nyiragongo volcano fissured, pouring enormous
amounts of lava across Goma, Congo. Within hours, half of the already
beleagured city was covered in blisteringly hot, foul-smelling lava. Most
of the rest was in flames. Here, locals flee a gas station that exploded
after some looters tried to steal gas from the tanks and spilled some.
